袁绍给何进出了招地方军阀进京绞杀阉党的主意，何进采纳后，宦官们先发制人，将入宫觐见何太后的何进砍死于乱刀之下，并挟持皇帝刘辩、陈留王刘协出走。
光熹元年（189年）八月，大将军何进想要诛除宦官，但反被宦官所杀，何氏的母亲舞阳君也被乱兵杀死。并州牧董卓受到征召，领兵马进入洛阳。
随着卢植、袁绍等人的出走、丁原被被吕布反戈的杀害，朝中再也没有反对董卓的声音了，这样，董卓就可以随心所欲了。
此时，她已束手无策，唯有等着董卓的处置了，最终，初平元年(公元190年)九月初一，董卓率领公卿到崇德殿，强迫何太后诏策废除少帝刘辩，贬为弘农王，立陈留王刘协为帝，是为汉献帝。
之后，何太后与少帝刘辩被幽禁宫中，失去了人身自由。不久，董卓借机用毒酒，将何太后与少帝刘辩先后鸩杀。
